Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF)

The HFpEF Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center is one of just a few subspecialty program in the United States dedicated to this very common subtype of heart failure. Started in 2018, the program is led by Parag Goyal, MD, MSc, an advanced heart failure physician and geriatric cardiologist

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), also known as diastolic heart failure, makes up half of all heart failure cases in the U.S. If you have been diagnosed with this type of heart failure, you can benefit from our comprehensive management program, where we personalize therapy to your unique needs.

As a patient, you will have access to all of the latest therapies and have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. Patients also receive education on best strategies for self-care and are encouraged to actively participate in shared decision-making along with their family members and caregivers.

What is Heart Failure with Persevered Ejection Fraction (HFpEF)?

Unlike other types of heart failure where the heart pump is damaged,  is a heart condition in which the heart pump is fairly normal (preserved). However, stiffening of the heart muscle and abnormalities in the blood vessels can still cause heart failure symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, and limitations in exercise. In older adult patients, HFpEF is increasingly recognized as the most common form of heart failure.

Comprehensive, Empowering, Expert Care

Diagnosing HFpEF can be challenging. A single blood test cannot determine HFpEF. This is why the physicians in our program complete comprehensive evaluations to assess your cardiovascular function and identify other chronic (long-term) medical conditions.

Once diagnosed, individualized therapy based on your unique cardiovascular and medical profile is developed resulting in a treatment plan to help relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and preserve independence. Our physicians take the time to ensure you have the knowledge and tools needed to best manage and understand your condition and strategies for self-care. As you may have other medical conditions, our team closely coordinates care with your other doctors and specialists, as needed, to help you reach your health goals.

Leaders in Research

There are many new strategies under development to treat HFpEF. Our program offers some of the most advanced treatment options in our program. There is also the opportunity to participate in clinical trials for those who are interested. Our clinical trials offer our patients access to new medications, new procedures/interventions, and innovative models of care that uniquely incorporate deprescribing (to address polypharmacy) and health coaching.
