Let鈥檚 talk about the flu.听As we approach听a time when听we may see the听collision of the听viruses that cause听both听the flu听and听COVID-19, getting a flu听vaccine听becomes听an听imperative and responsibility,听for those who are eligible to receive it.
Here we discuss what鈥檚 true鈥攁nd what鈥檚 not鈥攁bout the flu vaccine.听
If you're a current patient at AV研究所 Primary Care, please schedule the nurse visit for a flu shot through your Connect account.听
In addition to your primary care provider, flu vaccines are available at clinics; health departments; many pharmacies, schools and colleges; and employers. At this time, many听pharmacies offer flu vaccinations free of听charge.
With听rare exceptions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the annual flu vaccine to people six months of age and older.听Patients who are听pregnant听and have chronic illnesses听(such as diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease), along with听most听people who are allergic to eggs,听听receive flu shots.听听
When you get a flu shot, it听means you are less likely to get the flu.听That means your loved ones also are less likely to get the flu.听Sometimes听people experience cold-like symptoms after they get a flu shot, and sometimes they听still get the flu,听but it is less severe听than they would have experienced if they hadn鈥檛 received the shot.听
If you get a flu shot, you鈥檙e听more likely to stay well, and avoid the听fever and upper respiratory infections that sometimes accompany the flu.听Patients who get the vaccine also reduce their chances of hospitalization from those infections.
听
听recommends getting vaccinated for the flu during the fall season.听Older patients need their immunity to last throughout the听entire听flu season.听Vaccines are ongoing and recommended as long as the flu virus is circulating.听听
If you're a current Primary Care patient, you can schedule an appointment easily through Connect.听听
