A Message from the Division of Pediatric Urology Chief:
Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Urology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Department of Urology.聽 We provide world-class care to infants, children and adolescents with disorders of the kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra and external genitalia. Our team is comprised of board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric urologists and pediatric nurse practitioners who are committed to providing compassionate, high quality, patient-focused care. We also work exclusively with board-certified dedicated pediatric anesthesiologists to ensure the highest level of safety is met.
Our program highlights include:
- Pediatric Robotic Surgery: Robotic surgery allows us to minimize discomfort and reduce recovery time and hospitalization through minimally invasive keyhole surgery. Having performed many hundreds of pediatric robotic surgeries, we are one of the world鈥檚 most comprehensive and experienced pediatric robotic surgery programs. We offer minimally invasive robotic options for almost all kidney, ureter and bladder surgeries in patients as young as 2 months of age. Common robotic procedures include pyeloplasty, ureteral reimplantation, inguinal hernia repair and mitrofanoff appendicovesicostomy.
- Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH): Our CAH program, led by world-renowned CAH surgeon Dr. Dix Poppas, is one of the most experienced of its kind, holding recognition by the CARES Foundation as a CAH Center of Excellence.
- Hypospadias: We specialize in the management of both mild and severe hypospadias. We utilize cutting-edge treatments like hyperbaric oxygen, single and multi-staged repairs, oral and foreskin grafts and urethral advancement.
- Newborn Circumcision: We offer newborn circumcision in the office for infants younger than 3 months of age. We specialize in the management of patients who may have been refused circumcision elsewhere due to anatomic considerations.
- Awake Surgery: In select infants smaller than 18-pounds, we offer awake surgery options under a spinal block to avoid the need for general anesthesia.
- Bedwetting/Voiding Improvement Program: We have a dedicated program for children with urinary problems, including bedwetting, daytime leakage and urinary tract infections. Our dedicated pediatric program offers uroflowmetry and urodynamic testing, as well as treatment options like biofeedback and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS).
- Prenatal Counseling: We specialize in the management of hydronephrosis and offer scheduled prenatal consultation appointments for expectant families with urological concerns detected on fetal ultrasound.
- Second opinions: We offer appointments to review of images, reports and recommendations from other providers and institutions to help you feel confident about your options and medical decisions.
- Telemedicine: Many types of consultations can be done remotely in the comfort of your home through video visits.聽 Please call 212-746-5361 to see if your visit is eligible.聽
We understand how important your child鈥檚 health and well鈥慴eing are. Our team is committed to ensuring that every child and family is supported throughout the treatment journey and receives the highest quality of individualized care.
Sincerely,
Ardavan Akhavan, M.D.
